Applying to medical school this year and considering taking the BMAT? As you may have heard, the Admissions Testing Service are introducing the BMAT September this year.

So there are now two BMAT dates: you can now take the exam in either September OR November.

As you’ll already know, in previous years the BMAT was taken after students had submitted their UCAS application. However, that’s set to change this year: BMAT have recently announced a new testing session to take place on 9th September 2017.

Read on to find out more about how this affects you!

BMAT September: What does this mean for me?

This is good news for you!

Whereas before you could only sit the BMAT after submitting your UCAS application, the new test session in September means you can now find out your BMAT score before applying to university. This means that you can now strategically select the universities you apply to with your BMAT score in mind.

However, this does mean that if you choose to sit the BMAT in September, you’ll need to start preparing much earlier than you may have planned!

If you’re thinking of taking the BMAT in September, registration opens on 26th June 2017.

Can I take the BMAT in September AND November?

No, you can only sit the test once in the application cycle.

Which medical schools will accept the BMAT September results?

BMAT have stated that all universities that accept the November results will also accept September results. So these are:

There are two exceptions detailed on the BMAT site:

  • University of Oxford will only accept results from the November session for A100 Medicine and BC98 Biomedical Sciences. However, A101 Graduate Medicine will accept both September or November results.
  • Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) will only accept results from the November test session.

So if you’re applying to one of the universities above, you’ll need to sit the November test session, even if you’re applying to other medical schools that accept September results. Remember that you can only sit the test once in the application cycle.

Where can I sit the BMAT September?

According to the Admissions Testing Service, the BMAT September testing session will only take place at around 20 selected test centres in the UK – these will be released on the BMAT website soon.

Are there any changes to the November BMAT?

There won’t be any changes made to the November test. This will take place on Thursday 2nd November 2017.
