My GCSEs were a let down?

Hi my name is Hannah and I wanted to know, do I realistically have a chance of getting into medical school despite my GCSE grades?

For secondary school, I attended a prestigious private school in the West Midlands and attained the following grades for my GCSEs:

Maths – A

English Language – A

English Literature – A

Biology – A

Chemistry – B

Physics – B

French – A*

History – B

Business – A

Latin – A

These were rather disappointing as I was predicted 3 A*S and 7 As, but that didn’t change my lifelong dream of becoming a doctor to work for the charity Medicines Sans Frontieres.

I have left the private school and now attend a grammar school where I am studying Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Law.

So do I have a chance of getting into medical school, and if so, what A levels grades should I be aiming on achieving in order to get in?

Many thanks,

Hannah.

Your GCSE are totally fine! There was a student at a school near me who got to a very well known medical  school GCSE with no A* :D.

Hi Hannah,

Thank you for your question! You do definitely have a chance of getting in to med school – you’ll just need to be strategic about where you apply! For example, we’d recommend avoiding applying to universities like Birmingham, who rank applicants on their GCSE grades. However you do meet the ‘minimum’ requirement for medical schools, so with a strong UKCAT grade and work experience you have a chance!

You can read more about GCSE Requirements for Medicine here: https://www.themedicportal.com/application-guide/choosing-a-medical-school/gcse-requirements-for-medicine/

And more about A-Level subjects/grades here: https://www.themedicportal.com/application-guide/choosing-a-medical-school/what-a-levels-do-you-need-to-be-a-doctor/

Hope this helps 🙂
