Why did you decide to apply to study medicine overseas and why at the University of Nicosia Medical School in Cyprus?

Applying to study Medicine overseas wasn’t always on the agenda. It was only when I researched a variety of Medical Schools overseas that I realised the opportunities associated with studying Medicine abroad.

Having been on holiday to Cyprus each summer for over a decade, it was high on my priority list. The University of Nicosia offered a course that would enable me to practise in the States or the UK.

What is your favourite thing about studying medicine abroad and why?

Studying Medicine in Cyprus has allowed me to broaden my horizons. Not only academically, with the incorporation of the USMLE into the programme, but also socially.

I have met friends from all parts of the world, and have been able to use my holidays to travel, exploring other cultures. Although clichéd, leaving England has enabled me to open my eyes to the world, realising that other ways of life have so much to offer.

What are your tips for students applying to study medicine abroad?

Studying abroad can bring its difficulties, so creating a great support network is incredibly important. My main piece of advice would be to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace the culture in which you live, and appreciate what is around you. It is an opportunity of lifetime.

Do you think you will return to the UK to practise Medicine or will you stay overseas?

At the moment my aim is to return to the UK for the two foundation years. Depending on the score I achieve in the USMLE, I may decide to specialise in the USA. Another option would be to look at Australia or New Zealand for speciality, which is becoming increasingly popular with British junior doctors.

What five things do you think other students would love to know about studying Medicine at the University of Nicosia Medical School?
