The Medic Portal are thrilled to announce our brand new partnership with Gap Medics for an incredible two-week Community Healthcare Programme in Tanzania.

This programme is a hugely exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from healthcare professionals, gain medical work experience in a rural community and receive medical school application advice from two leading experts.

We have also created a Widening Participation Bursary Scheme to cover the cost of the placements (however, please note that this excludes flights and other expenses) for a small number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.


What will the Community Healthcare Programme involve?

Designed for Year 11 and Sixth Form students, this dynamic programme will give you a fascinating insight into medicine and a customised clinical experience by observing real patients and professionals at work.

Organised by two leading experts in helping students on the journey to medical school, the programme is a unique opportunity to shadow experienced doctors from one of Gap Medics’ partner hospitals in Tanzania.

You will be able to:

  • Assist with the delivery of a range of healthcare treatments in pop-up clinics, from vaccinations to contraception advice
  • Immerse yourself in Tanzania’s local culture
  • Volunteer in nearby schools, engaging with the local community
  • Attend global health tutorials, designed to give you insight into specific health issues in Tanzania
  • Learn from a personal mentor to help you get the most from your experience. They will provide clear guidance and supervision throughout your placement, so that you are well equipped to reflect on your time in your personal statement and interviews
  • Enjoy a fun, once-in-a-lifetime trip with like-minded peers

This is an exciting opportunity to gain some unique work experience to give your medical school application the boost it needs to stand out – and to make a real difference to the lives of local communities in Tanzania.

Where will I be staying in Tanzania?

During your placement, you will be living in Gap Medics’ accommodation, The Forest House. The house itself is situated just outside the centre of Morogoro and is within walking distance of the town centre.

It is private for Gap Medics students and staff, surrounded by trees, with lots of outdoor space and a swimming pool to enjoy in your free time. The bedrooms and bathrooms are single sex, dormitory style.

The house also has wifi, an emergency phone and a permanent staff team. We also have a private chef in each of our destinations to cook a range of international foods and also some of the local cuisine from Tanzania!

When will the programme run?

The programme will run from 8th July – 21st July 2018. Each programme can accommodate 66 students.

How much will the placement cost?

Registration fee: £290

Placement fee: £1760

All that needs to be paid initially is the £290 registration for you to secure your place on the programme. The balance will be due 90 days before you are due to travel and can be paid in two instalments.

The price includes the following:

  • Two-week placement
  • Global health tutorials
  • Gap Medics’ family-feel accommodation and food
  • Personal mentor and clinical supervisor

Widening Participation: Bursary Scheme

As part of our Widening Participation Scheme, we are offering a range of bursary places on our Tanzania 2018 programme for Year 12 students. Please note that this bursary includes the cost of the placement and does not include flights or other expenses. You do not have to pay the £290 registration fee if you are applying for this programme.
