As part of our Widening Participation Scheme, we are offering a range of bursary places on our Tanzania 2018 programme for Year 12 students. To be eligible to apply, students must fit into one of the two categories below. After you have applied, our team will review your application and, if eligible, you will proceed to the second stage.

Please apply only if you are able to commit to the two-week programme from 8th July 2018.

Deadline for bursary applications is 1st May 2018.

Please note that this bursary includes the cost of the placement and does not include flights or other expenses. In addition, please note that we cannot guarantee a bursary place for all applicants as spaces are limited. You do not have to pay the £290 registration fee if you are applying for this programme. 


Application: Stage One

Category One:

Eligible students must fit all of the following criteria:

  • Attending a publicly funded school or college
  • In receipt of free school meals
  • Demonstrate academic track record – minimum of 5 A*-B GCSEs
  • First in their family to attend university
  • Applying to Medicine or Dentistry (2019 entry)

With either parents being in receipt of one of the following:

  • Income support
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Universal Credit

In addition, the household income should be no more than £25,000.

Documents Required

1. Headed letter from the school confirming the student’s:

  • Attendance in the school
  • Receipt of free school meals
  • Confirmation of academic track record being Minimum of 5A*-B GCSEs
  • Confirmation of their application to study Medicine or Dentistry (2019 entry)

 2. An award letter (dated within the last 6 months) from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), with either parent being the named as the claimant of any of the following:

  • Income support
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Universal Credit

Category Two:

Alternatively, students (with demonstrated academic track record – minimum of 5 A*-B GCSEs; attended a publicly funded school/college) along with one of the following criteria will be eligible without needing any further documentations regarding either parent’s circumstances:

  • Care leaver – have lived, or are currently living, in local authority care
  • Is estranged from their family/living independently*

*Estranged means that you are not supported by/not in communication with both of your parents.

Documents Required

1. Headed letter from the school confirming the student’s:

  • Attendance in the school
  • Confirmation of academic track record being Minimum of 5A*-B GCSEs
  • Confirmation of their application to study Medicine or Dentistry (2019 entry)

2. Evidence of care leaver status from either a social worker of Leaving Care Personal advisor must be provided in the form of a letter/email with contact details included.
