If you’re applying to Medicine for 2018 entry, you’ll be writing your personal statement and applying through UCAS in the first months of Year 13 – so preparation is crucial.

Here’s our essential checklist of how to prepare:

1. Think about when you’d like to sit your UCAT

UCAT registration opens on 2nd May (less than two weeks away!) – so it’s crucial you’re clued up about the exam beforehand. For information on all sections, from Situational Judgement to Verbal Reasoning, you can visit our UCAT Guide.

Registering for the UCAT early will mean you’ll be able to book your exam at a time and date that suits you, so start thinking about when the best time for you would be. We’d recommend sitting the exam this summer, before your attention turns to your Personal Statement, BMAT and Year 13 coursework…

2. Start your reading

The next few months are a perfect time to brush up on some reading. Spend some time familiarising yourself with Good Medical Practice and Tomorrow’s Doctors. You could also explore specific areas of Medicine you’re particularly interested in by reading different articles or journals.

Reading these now may help you to think more about your application and why you want to study Medicine, and so will be excellent preparation for writing your Personal Statement.

3. Book yourself onto open days

Open days are a great way to find out more about the medical schools you’re interested in. You’ll have the opportunity to meet current medical students, learn more about the course and visit the city. Make sure you book onto these early as spaces will fill up!

4. Get organised

Juggling UCAT, BMAT, your Personal Statement, your UCAS application, your coursework and trying to maintain a social life can be very tricky, so organisation is key!

Make a note of the key dates for this application cycle and stick them somewhere you can see them. These should include the UCAS deadline for Medicine (15th October), open days you’re attending, UCAT and BMAT dates, as well as your coursework deadlines so you can keep on top of your workload.
