Volunteering as a patient experience?

Good day, Sir/Madam. I am a college student interested in studying medicine. In order to gain some experience, I applied to a hospital to volunteer as a patient experience surveyor. The role involves me having to visit different wards to ask patients questions aimed at improving healthcare services delivered to them.

Thus, I was wondering if volunteering as a patient experience surveyor would be considered as a useful form of experience even if it doesn’t involve direct patient care.

Thank you very much.

Hi Melissa!

Thank you for your question.

The most important thing about medical work experience is how you transfer your experiences and skills to medicine – so have a think about the skills you could apply. For example, communication skills or empathy while speaking to the patients and understanding their situations.

You can have a look at some of our recent blogs on how to apply skills to medicine:

Hope this helps! 🙂
