Dr Katherine Smith – Academic Lead for Student Support at Brunel Medical School shares insights into the unrivalled student support service at Brunel University of London.
Embarking on a medical degree is an exciting but demanding journey, requiring not only academic excellence but also resilience, adaptability, and a supportive environment. Recognising the challenges of a rigorous medical education, Brunel has developed a comprehensive and innovative approach to student support, ensuring that every individual has the resources they need to thrive academically, personally, and professionally.
With a commitment to fostering student success, Brunel provides a wide range of tailored services, including personalised academic mentoring, extensive pastoral care, and dedicated wellbeing initiatives. These services are designed to create an environment where students can confidently navigate the demands of medical training while building the resilience and skills necessary for a rewarding career in medicine.
In this blog, Brunel’s Academic Lead for Student Support delves into the unique programs and initiatives that set the university apart. From the moment students join Brunel, they are welcomed into a community that prioritises their development and wellbeing, ensuring they are fully equipped to meet the challenges of a medical career.
Our aim at Brunel Medical School is to make our students feel welcome, safe and at home on our West London campus. We have an incredibly supportive environment with a robust system of student support embedded throughout the course, to promote well-being and resilience, and to foster a sense of belonging and identity.
We will guide students through their medical studies, whether they intend to enter the UK Foundation Programme or return to their home country after graduating. We will also help international students understand the requirements for practicing medicine in their home country. Our Brunel Medical School Student Support and Well-Being Team is a student’s first point of contact for all of the services available – enhancing their journey through the medical school. The team will help students identify resources available directly through the medical school or through the University and ensure they are appropriately supported if any issues arise.
All students are allocated a House Tutor, who will support students’ personal, academic and professional development. The student and their House Tutor will share a journey which includes structured one-on-one meetings which focus on an academic coaching approach.
Group House meetings and social activities with the other students in their house creates a sense of belonging and a home away from home. Our supportive team can direct students to our central student services, including counsellors, disability and mental health advisors and study skills mentors, which provides support to help overcome certain challenges so that students can achieve their university goals.
