What Can You Do If You Don’t Have The Grades?

In recent years, a prominent issue affecting university applicants has been grade inflation, with a higher number of students receiving top grades, and many applicants missing out on a university place.

With competition for medical school places so fierce, and a lack of undergraduate medicine places available through Clearing, many high-achieving medicine applicants will be left disappointed and contemplating their future in medicine.

As a student who may find yourself affected by this issue, the disappointment of not gaining a well deserved medicine place can be heart-wrenching. However, it’s essential to remember that your journey is far from over.

Continue your journey as an aspiring doctor with a Pathway to Medicine

As a Top 5 UK Medical School (Times Good University Guide 2023), Swansea University understands the challenges brought on by a lack of undergraduate medicine places, and the impacts of grade inflation. Our Pathways to Medicine programme offers determined and passionate individuals a chance to continue their journey towards a career in medicine.

Through our Pathways to Medicine, you will join one of 5 BSc undergraduate courses in medical science subjects, including:

These degrees cover key areas of medical sciences to build the knowledge, skills and experience that will play a large role in your medical studies and your future career as a doctor. You will also attend clinical teaching modules, designed to increase your skills and knowledge in medicine.

You will participate in clinical observation placements and have the opportunity of a guaranteed interview for our accelerated, 4-year Graduate Entry Medicine course with a lowered GAMSAT score*.

By taking this route, you will study for a total of seven years (only one more year than an intercalated medicine degree, and two more years than undergraduate medicine), graduating with two standalone degrees while building a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience to set you on the best footing for a successful career in medicine.

At Swansea University, we pride ourselves on providing determined and passionate individuals the opportunity to continue their medical education in spite of challenges and setbacks. Our Pathways to Medicine programme is not only a lifeline to those who have missed out on undergraduate medicine, but also delivers a rewarding and supportive learning experience to aspiring doctors.
