A new online learning community for aspiring doctors has been launched by The Medic Portal in collaboration with the Royal Society of Medicine. Aiming to revolutionise the way students tackle applications to medical school, the online community offers unique and innovative learning tools including online exam simulation, a video interview platform and a gamified personal portfolio that allows students to keep track of their learning activities. A key aim is to widen access into medicine for students from a range of different backgrounds.
A free online guide provides over 100 pages of free information and advice covering all stages of the medical school application process. The Royal Society of Medicine is offering funding to students from disadvantaged backgrounds for the subscription-based online question banks for the UKCAT and BMAT aptitude tests and other paid-for resources available through www.themedicportal.com, and will also be offering bursaries to students in a number of state schools to attend courses and events organised by The Medic Portal.
The Medic Portal team is led by practising doctors who have already helped thousands of students get into medical school by offering a programme of courses designed to help them through the demanding application process. Dr Ricardo Tavares, Co-Founder, The Medic Portal, said: “Our new online community, which launched in July, offers a unique and trustworthy one-stop-shop for every step of the medical school application process. All students have access to our free online resources and advice, and we have been delighted to see the hugely positive reaction from students, parents and schools globally, with over 3,000 individual online accounts created in our first 12 weeks.
Mr Ian Balmer, Chief Executive, Royal Society of Medicine, said: “The future of the medical profession relies on medical schools selecting the candidates most suited to becoming excellent doctors. Despite some students having the necessary aptitude for a career in medicine, their socio-economic circumstances create a barrier to entry. Our collaboration with The Medic Portal will play an essential role in improving the opportunities for disadvantaged students to get into medical school.”

The Royal Society of Medicine is one of the country’s major providers of accredited postgraduate medical education. Each year, the RSM organises over 400 academic and public events, spanning global health, medical innovation and over 60 medical specialties, providing a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and debate. Videos of many key lectures are also available online, increasing access to the Society’s education programme. The RSM is home to one of the finest medical libraries in the world, with an extensive collection of books, journals, electronic journals and online medical databases. As well as providing medical education, the Society aims to promote an exchange of information and ideas on the science, practice and organisation of medicine, both within the health professions and with responsible and informed public opinion. The Society is not a policy-making body and does not issue guidelines or standards of care.
The Medic Portal (TMP), in official partnership with the Royal Society of Medicine, is the global online community for everyone who wants a career in medicine — and those that advise them. Each year, TMP works with hundreds of schools across 3 continents and teaches thousands of aspiring medics. TMP provides expert courses, conferences, tuition and unique online learning tools covering the key components of the application process. TMP’s new online platform was launched in 2015, and provides the definitive and trustworthy one stop shop for all aspiring medics, parents and teachers. The platform provides a wealth of free information and advice, numerous innovative online learning tools for aspiring medics, and houses a community of students, teachers and parents to interact with each other. TMP is committed to widening access into medicine and to helping meet the goals of the Medical Schools Council’s ‘Selecting for Excellence’ Report, as well as continuing to change medical education for the better. TMP has raised £0.5 million of funding since the launch of the new online community in July 2015.
